Oct 20, 2011 THM700-R4 - 4 Speed transmission used in GM cars and light trucks with the 2.8, 3.1, 4.3, V6, Chevrolet built 305, 350 and 454 engines from 1982 to 1992. 4L60 - Early 1990's saw the 700R4 renamed to the 4L60, and 'electronic' models were named 4L60E. 4L60 means 4 forward speeds, L = longitudily mounted (rear wheel drive). 60 is the strength. T5 Transmission Identification - What the Tags and Markings Mean. The identification number for a T5 is usually only found in 2 locations. A metal tag can be found on the driver's side of the case and is held down by one of the tailhousing bolts. The five transmissions installed on 1988 to 1992 Chevrolet trucks, according to Drivetrain.com, were the Borg-Warner T5, the Getrag, Muncie or New Venture models HM290, 5LM60 and NV3500 and the New Venture NV4500. The NV4500 appeared on 1992 full-sized trucks only. Locating the manufacturer's tag, if present, is. Types of Manual Transmissions. GM has since moved on to different technologies. The four-speed is a relic of the past with innovation pushing the bounds to nine- and even ten-speed gearboxes. Each of the 13 four-speed manual transmissions had a specific application. That of itself is the first step toward a positive ID. The Saginaw reverse shift lever is on the cover, and the cover has 7 bolts. The Borg Warner has a 9 bolt cover. Muncies are the hot tip, since they usually were used with high performance engines. Again on the muncie, and looking at the cover, 3rd/4th gear lever is on the left. 1st/2nd gear lever is on the right. Further Muncie identification The close ratio gearboxs generally came with 3.73+ gear ratio'ed cars. 3.55 geared and higher (numerically lower) cars used the wide ratio gearbox. Due to the wide combination of id's, stampings, numbers, etc... varied and even GM couldn't keep track of what was what, it's best to ID your gearbox visually, taking what is stamped on the box FWIW. The best way to ID the transmission is to count teeth. |

The T5 World Class is a five speed, RWD or 4WD transmission. The T5 World Class is a American engineering design, this transmission is all aluminum top loaded with internal single rail shift linkage. This transmission the T5 World Class has tapered bearings supporting the clutster gear. Syncro’s 1st and 2nd rings are a three piece design, 3rd and 4th are lined steel and also the fifth ring is brass. You’ll find the identification casting number beginning with 1352 on the transmission case. Larger front input shaft bearings were utilized by Ford in Cougars and Thunderbird 87-93 and also the 87–93 Mustang with 2.3L 4 cyl. A taper input pilot bearing is used on the 93-96 Ford Cobra rather than the loose rollers commonly found in this transmission. Supplying this casting information when ordering a replacement transmission or transmission parts is critical. The T5 World Class was adopted by beginning in 1985. The common failure modes for the T5 non World Class transmissions are: damage caused by damaged seals causing loss of fluid leading to bearing failure typically cause by vibration from damaged driveshaft, worn out or damaged transmission or engine mounts. The second most common problem found in the T5 non World Class 5 speed transmission is damage caused by incorrect speed shifting, this will destroy synchronizers, sliders and gears. We are seeing a lot of the T5 non World Class unit coming in to be rebuilt with significant bearing wear only caused by the age and mileage on this very popular transmission.
