They looked after my dad before he died and helped mom & I through our grief with councilling sessions. I have happy memories of my time working for the hospice but strange as it may seem, when mom died, and I decided to go back volunteering, I chose the former PAWS charity shop, now called MART (Midlands Animal Rescue Team). Memories Of My Working Life Book
On our all-girls camping trip during the 8th grade we were to perform for our entire entourage. Dressing up as a man and that too, a famous Bollywood icon, and dancing with another girl I wasn’t even close to was quite challenging. We pulled it off, albeit in a hilarious manner. So much so that when we were in 9th grade an encore performance was in high demand (I performed with a different girl I was close to) to send off our school alumni. – Azmeen Wadia

School has had to be the most boring time of our lives, but equally fun. So when you look back on your class photograph, you smell the nostalgic scent of all the tiny bits of fun that turned into a ball of amusement. But the fact that the ball rolled downhill just too quick, somewhere saddens a part of us. That’s memories, they’re bound to be made and fade. Amongst my worst memories from school days, the scene is still clear in my mind. Once while playing hide and seek with the bad boy, the good boy’s hand mistakenly got stuck between the classroom door and its screws. The bad boy standing next to him did not bother to help and instead kept closing the door giving the good boy more pain. To help the good boy I took my pencil and hit the bad boy on the head. Result: The good boy broke his fingers and the bad boy was suspended for only two days. And this was the second year of kindergarten.
One of the best memories was in Grade 9. We used to have two biology classes back to back on Tuesdays. The teacher used to forget her schedule (yay) and we would enjoy playing on the school grounds instead. Mind you, she hardly attended 40 per cent of our classes. – Hema Lalwani

In the 8th grade my English teacher put my name up for the Elocution Competition. She probably thought I would be a smooth talker on stage because a) I loved writing (I still do) and b) I used to be a chatterbox (I still am). But I have always suffered from an acute stage-fright and however much I pleaded with her to withdraw my name was in vain. On D-Day, I was a nervous wreck but somehow managed to get through the first two paragraphs. Then I suddenly sneezed. I was so shocked that I forgot the rest and stood there blinking and sweating. A teacher escorted me off stage after some time. – Radhika Acharya

The best, and you could also say the worst at the time, was when I was caught stealing mangoes from the school gardens. Nicknamed monkey, you could always find me above ground, cooling my heels on some deliciously tall tree. Ironic that now I get vertigo from even 5-inch heels. So back in the day, my school principal, Ms. Webber, caught me with the yellow fruits and punished me for a whole month. The punishment of those times would be considered unusual now, but I had to mow the entire school lawn by hand. Not an easy task, but even though I was a thief, I was a thief with integrity. I did my time with such panache that Ms. Webber had to praise me for my punishment. Those were indeed the best years of my life. – Razia Taher

Memories Essay
For me the best memory from school will be about Ms. Martin, my English teacher from India. I was never very good in studies, but Ms. Martin always motivated me to succeed. In fact she was the only teacher who gave me gift vouchers to buy books from the Dar Es Salaam bookshop to my very greaet surprise. Then she left Tanzania, and went back home to India. The world, my mum would always tell me, is round. And I again found Ms. Martin as my next door neighbour when I went to India for my further studies. If that wasn’t memorable, imagine meeting her again on the streets of Mumbai while I was trying to catch the red bus. Whenever I go to India, I always drop by and meet my teacher from a school on a different continent. Not many are as lucky as me. – Rosmin Lukmanji

Tamagotchi was a craze during my school days. Although it wasn’t allowed at school, every student carried it and hid it away from the teacher’s sight. – Rubiya Gazi

From having ‘stomach aches’ in the morning to waiting for the last bell to ring, the eight hours of school every day seemed like they’d never end, but they did. Now that I think of school, I only remember the fun I had. Like sitting on the back bench to sleep during history class and asking someone tall to ‘cover’ us. I remember opening our lunch boxes in the second period because the lunch hour seemed so far away. The favourite person of the class was the person who got leftover pizza for lunch. When a friend asks for a pen, you tell them ‘sorry bro I only have this one’; when a crush asks and we give our very last pen, we turn to our friend to ask, ‘dude give me a pen please’. The last page of all books was our creative corner, we played tic-tac-toe, checked if we were going to end up with our crush using FLAMES, doodled and drew the first thing that came to mind. The washroom was our escape, we’d take the shortest route to the washroom but walked as slow as possible taking the longest route back. The only fights we ever had were about who gets to sit behind the smartest kid in class during exams. I don’t remember crying on the first day (although mum said I did) but I do remember crying on the last. – Carol Sachdeva
The Best Memories

My best memory in school was when I received a trophy in grade 9 because I won the inter-house singing competition. I was jumping with joy since it was my first trophy ever. My worst memory is that I slipped and fell into a muddy puddle in grade 3. I expected my friends to help me, but instead they were laughing at me. It made me very sad. – Megna Rajagopal
